二甲基亚砜DMSO属于非质子极性溶剂，常用于化学反应、PCR反应的助溶剂，提高超长PCR反应的得率，也作为有机和无机化合物的溶剂，用于脂肪、碳水化合物、染料、树脂、聚合物等。DMSO作为渗透性保护剂，可以在低温下快速穿透细胞膜进入细胞，降低冰点，延缓冻存过程，避免细胞内冰晶产生导致的细胞损伤。
